Katie

2 weeks later

He’s set up camp in my backyard.

He literally has a tent he now lives in and everything. He lights a fire at nighttime and sleeps cuddled up with a blanket. In the mornings, he does pushups and eats out of wrappers. Whatever he does, he doesn’t leave the backyard.

I don’t know what his game is, but seeing him out there like that, it’s thawing my frozen heart.

I feel bad for him so I sneak him some food. We haven’t exchanged a single word, but I leave the back door open. Just in case.

He looks up at me with puppy dog eyes every time I come out, but I don’t talk to him. I just hand him his food and snacks, and leave. I just don’t want him to starve.

It’s his silent protest.

It’s his way of telling me that he’s not going anywhere. He doesn’t ask if he can come inside because it’s his way of showing respect.

He gets that he hurt me before, and this is how he’s making amends.

I spend my days alternating between planning for my yoga classes and spying on him from behind the curtains.

He sits there like he has all the time in the world. Like he could do this for the rest of his life if he had to.

I remember the lessons he taught my class in high school. Only about one-fourth of men in training make it through the SEAL training. It’s one of the most rigorous military training in the world, after all. There’s a part of it called ‘Hell week’ where they go almost five days with less than five hours of sleep.

I don’t doubt whether he’ll stick around or not. I just wonder if this is enough to forgive what he’s already done.

He catches me watching. He always does. I close the curtain, and feel a blush creeping down my chest.

I made some extra fruit salad today, so I pack some for him and head out.

This time, something makes me want to stay longer. I kind of feel bad for him. He hasn’t moved for two weeks. He’s basically living in my backyard now, where he can keep an eye on me.

“I got you more fruit,” I say, kneeling down and handing him the sealed bowl.

He looks startled for just a second. “You eat more fruit than anyone I’ve ever seen before,” he chuckles.

It’s true. I’ve not always been like this, but I’m only in the mood for fruit these days.

“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Mr. Wood,” I say. It feels more naughty calling him by his last name. My core clenches at being this close to him, breathing the same air as him.

“That’s why I’m not moving until you forgive me,” he replies easily.

“What if I never do?”

“Either way, you’re stuck with me for life.”

“I don’t like your beard,” I say, teasing him. It’s grown even longer, and makes him look like Jason Momoa. I kind of dig the look.

His eyebrows draw together for a second.
